IH 300 Torque amplifier

I just dragged home a 55 IH 300 utility in non running condition. The problem I am having right now is that it will not roll unless the clutch is pushed down. All it will do is the rear wheels will turn in opposite directions as if it was in gear. Also the engine will not turn unless the clutch is pushed down. All I have been told is that the pnly two problems when it was parked is the T/A had not worked in quite some time and that the hydraulic pump was leaking pretty bad. Could the T/A be causing this ? I am not familiar with the T/A tractors and appreciate any advice

Chris If the trany is in nutrial you should be able to move the tractor. The TA could cause the engine not to trun over.

It could be stuck in two gears. Can you shift the gears? If so ignore the rest of this post. I looked at a non-running 350 row crop yesterday. Transmission appeared to be in neutral, but I could not get it in any gear, clutch in or out. TA had no effect. Did not try to push it because pushing 4500 lbs plus with a flat tire is hard to do. With it jacked up, wheels normally turn in opposite directions. I think that it is in 2 gears, and that the TA should have no effect. Try removing the shift lever and see it you can move the rails with a screwdriver.

It appears to be in neutral but I tried to move the shift rails last night. They are all in the neutral position but the 1st/ reverse rail will not move. This thing will not turn through the trans unless the clutch is pushed down. I also can not turn the pto either. The story I have gotton on the tractor is that he drove it into the barn and shut it down 5 years ago

If it will roll with the clutch down, it is in gear. All the shifting gears except High Gear are sliding gears splined to shafts. High is a sliding spline coupling input to output (direct)
If it is in a low gear first or reverse, it would be hard to turn the engine with the wheels.
the engine is probably stiff.
I will bet the trans has had a shift fork wear out, and get out of place. If the 1-R rail will not move, I bet that that fork is bent, or out of place. Pulling the top shifter cover off might let you see better just what is going on. Jim
