I just picked up a 51 M with the factory high speed low & reverse. It has been sitting for over 10 year's, but got it running. I need info on how they work, when can you shift, do you have to stop to shift? There is a cable also that is factory mounted on the lite bar that goe's in down by the belly pump. Is this also part of of the high low system? Any information you can give will helpfull. If I need a new cable where can I get one? Thank you for any help.

There is no factory high speed low and reverse. There is a factory low speed low and reverse and a factory high speed 4th. There were also M&W and Heisler aftermarket 9 speeds with 4 additional gears between 4th and 5th. Not sure which you have.

Don,

What you have is one of the "9 speed" conversions, not a "high speed low and reverse." The person who sold you the tractor really didn't know what he had.

The 9 speed gives you 4 more gears between 4th and 5th. You activate the gearbox by pulling the cable, and then use gears 1-4 to get the higher speeds.

Like any other gear the tractor must be stopped to shift.

Parts are just about impossible to find, but a cable is a cable. You should be able to find a suitably stiff cable to replace the original if you remove it and adapt it with a little fabrication skill and creativity.
