A while back I realized that there was never a hole at the rear of the hood on my H that would be to grease the U-joint on the steering shaft. At the same time the U-joint doesn't have a grease zerk....but I think most H's I see have that hole.

What's the deal with this???

Seth,

I've never seen one WITH a hole. Where did you get the idea that there's supposed to be a hole?

The only plausible explanation I can think of is that at some point IH switched from a grease-able u-joint to a sealed u-joint.

Earlier models had the hole, don't know when it wasn't installed, Super H's did not have it. I say this without looking at my Super H.

Are you sure that the grease zerk is not just missing?

On my "M" and the 400's they both have this hole to grease the support for the shaft not the grease zerk.
I would have to look at the "H" to see if it does.

But it's not for the u-joint it's for the support.

Seth, the earlier H hoods actually had two holes. One for the support and one for the U-joint. At some point the U-joints were upgraded with the permanently lubed needle bearings and the corresponding hole was dropped. The hood on my '47 has two holes, the hood on my '51 has only one.

Hey Seth,
Don't know about the H but I would assume that it is similar to the M. I know on my 40 M bought new by my grandfather that it has TWO holes in the hood to access grease fittings, one on the steering shaft support and one for the GREASABLE U joint. I remember when the IH dealer sent a mechanic up here to change out the rear steering shaft and U joint. Must have been a recall or something like that, cuz my grandfather was too TIGHT to spend money on tractor parts unless it was totally worn out.

My '40, '43, '45 H's all have two holes. My '48 has only one. The '43 is the only one that has a greaseable U-joint.

That is the correct answer.
