I have had so many hand crank tractors with no electric now I am puzzled. (1944 M) I ran all new wiring as per Bob M #2 diagram. But new 3 post VR is not mounted on generator it is frame mounted. I Have new amp gauge that will discharge when you pull the switch so it is wired correct and working. I have done most of all the testing and troubling shooting as per John T charging system. All seems to test OK I have jumped wiring and grounding as he said. My question is how do you test the output of the genarator? Does anyone have diagrams for the genarator and brush adjustments? The gen is used off running tractor BUT! that does not meen it is working! I think this is my problem. Thanks for any help you may have Oldiron29

if you run the motor test from john t's chart, and the genny runs and then picks up speed, its prolly ok. grounding the field should put the genny to full output, generally 10-20 amps max. something to check that i ran in to was the terminal on the genny case was shorting out when i tightened the nut down. forget if was the f or a terminal, but the insulation was worn enough to short when tight.

Glennster, I have not run the belt off test.
I am backing up and testing and checking for 1/2 volt out put at gen. Oldiron29

i use john t's test from start to finish and dont skip any steps. if you cant pass a part of the test, you found the problem. and.......i dont want to get hollered at by john t !!!!

went back out with the belt off the gen will not run! I removed it and put it on the floor jumped both pos to gen case and ground to A on Gen from battery nothing! so I guess I have the problem.

Gene, It did not motor. I opened cover all looks clean brush are free and moving. I looked for loose or broken wires from termanals, all looks connected and entact. I am lost I guess i will have to take it to a genarator guy to go through
