Farmall 656 won't shut off

I am working on a Farmall 656 Gas tractor that stays running even after you turn the key off. It has to be backfeeding power from the charging system to the ignition. It is equipped with a generator and regulator. The regulator doesn"t have an ignition terminal so I guess you would call it self exciting. The only way you can shut it off is to slow the rpm"s down until the charging system stops working. The generator light will come on and the engine will shut off. My customer recently installed a new wiring harness in this tractor. I have checked it over with a wiring diagragm, and I can"t see anything that is hooked up wrong. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks in advance.

There are some possibilities.
If the coil is connected to a ballast resistor, the there may be a second connection on that terminal. It should go to the starter relay I terminal (four terminals two big, two small One small is a S the other is an I.
If it is hooked any where else, or something is tee'd into that wire it might cause it.
If the Voltage regulator input (ARM terminal) is connected to the ignition in any way it will cause it. (that wire has only two connections, one to the Arm terminal, and one to the Gen Big terminal.
If the ignition controlled anti Dieseling Fuel shutoff solenoid on the carb is wired wrong, it might feed back into the ignition.

Trace the voltage with it running but OFF, and find its source. Jim

Is the solenoid feed hooked to the correct terminal ("I") at the starter? If so, is the little return spring assembled properly inside the solenoid cap?

The primary ignition can only get fire from two sources, the resistor (via the ignition switch) and the solenoid. Make sure he hasn't tapped into either of those circuits and also at the coil "+" terminal.

See if the wire feeding your ignition is connected to the correct terminal on the ignition switch. There should only be voltage present when the ignition switch is in the on position. Hal
