IH 784 shift problem

When I shift my IH 784 tractor into gear it sometimes shifts solidly, other times it will act like it just slips. Sometimes it helps to work the clutch, or grind the gears a little with the clutch out, then it will go in gear solidly again. It works the same whether in hi, lo, or reverse. When working in the field, when you hit a bump it will come out of gear. What is the problem? Does something just need adjusted or is it something in the transmission?

Hi Koehen, does your 784 actually come out of gearin 1 thru 4 or Hi/Lo/Rev or does it just stop and by depressing/releasing the clutch it resumes again.
Does it have a T/A and does it do the same thing in both Hi and Lo T/A?

It comes out of gear in in Hi Lo and Rev. The Hi/Lo lever does not go into the neutral position when it goes out of gear, but stays in position only feels like it moves slightly, because when I put back in gear, I can feel that it just barely slipped out. Sometimes seems like it will grab again just by depressing/releasing the clutch, but other times it does not work. I know I am not giving a clear answer, but it doesn't work the same all the time.
Yes it does have a T/A, same thing in Hi or Lo.

Mine would act similar. The shifter would seem tight, sometimes went in,or it would pop out.We used a 3pt fertilizer spreader and finally figured the fertilizer got up in there and corroded the shifter where it met the shaft, lubed it up quite a bit and it cured our problem

Hi Koehn, a few things to check out:
Is the Hi/Lo/Rev linkage worn and sloppy?
Has the sheet metal around the shift levers been bent or mispositioned.
There are adjustments on the shifter rods. Sometimes the shifter lever that goes into the transmission case can become twisted or even snap off.

The next time it appears to pop out of gear try pushing it into gear without touching the clutch and listen for gears grinding. If there is no gears grinding then maybe it is the T/A disengaging. My brother has a 684 and the T/A would unlock on it. Sometimes to get it going again had to put Hi/Lo/Rev in Neutral depress and release clutch a few times and then it would work again. We had replaced the clutch about a year before. He had the T/A replaced with an eliminator shaft. That fixed the problem.

Hope this helps
