Been reading a lot of messages on this subject. My question is about the 1 with a circle around it cast into the cap of older engines. When did IH stop putting the 1 on caps? And was the mark ever supposed to be used for anything?

That is obviously where the number one spark plug wire went, and when you aligned the timing marks and pulled the cap, rotor with it too.
My spark plug wires were short, and if you put them on differently, they wouldnt fit

Well yeah, it's a reference mark to start from and yeah, here is a new cap from CNH Global and they are still marked.

I wonder what the aluminum silver colored metal in the towers is. The old inserts were brass. When I use this type of cap a white powdery corrosion forms at the tower connection. I try to remember to ask for brass inserts when buying a new cap. Thank you for the picture.
