Farmall H, 4th Gear

I"m currenty restoring an H, bought it knowing it had an issue in 4th gear, when in 4th and the clutch let out their was no movement or any sign of power being transmitted, but was fine in all other gears. Popped the top off the case this morning expecting to find an obvious gear damaged, very visable, found some with very minor rounding but nothing obvious that would keep it from operating. The shifting forks seem to work perfectly. This isn"t my first Farmall restoration, but it"s my first time into a transmission...anyone have some words of guidance? What am i missing?

I've had an H transmission apart before, but I'm no expert, just a suggestion that maybe the last owner put a gear in backwards and its not engaging. Maybe try putting it in 4th gear and either jack a rear tire off the floor and turn it, or roll the tractor if it still has 4 wheels on it, while watching the power train.

The shift forks should be straight and evenly spaced when in nuetral. Your shifter tip may also need to be welded up. The bearing that holds that assembly may be worn and allowed the whole assembley to drop down just enough that the fork is not engaging. Grab the assembly and lift up on it. It shouldn't move much. This was the problem in an M I had that was doing the same thing your's is doing. I ended up bending the fork so it would work and ran it till the motor spun a bearing. If that doesn't work I would guess that the gears aren't installed correctly. I can't imagine how that could be but I'm no expert. Post a picture of the gear train looking down from the top and the true experts on this board can tell you if it's correctly assembled.

After thinking about this all day i went home and counted gear teeth...Whats listed in the parts manual shows part #37 is to have 29 outer teeth and 18 inner teeth, thats 4th speed sliding gear.. Three people counted mine and it has only 28 (with none broken off) and it doesn't even touch the lower gear listed as "fourth speed driving gear", also with all teeth in tact. I have to conclude that someone has put the wrong gear in it at some point!! The "special 4th speed 7mph gear listed in the parts manual indicates it has 29 teeth...so its close but not correct.Again, anyone have any thoughts??? Am i right in that someone put an incorrect gear in it? It fits the splined shaft perfectly with no slop and everything else is good....

There are combinations of gears in several transmissions that can fit in that trans incorrectly. It might be easiest to find a donor tractor in a salvage yard and swap out the two gears. as a set. Be careful to assess the condition of the Fifth gear splines on the 4th/5th slider, and the input shaft. They are often toast on tractors that have been raked into 5th from 4th 20,000 times. They must have clean straight sides and little wear to be sure of having a good fifth gear. Jim

If fifth gear is working, the 4th/5th gear slider is installed correctly. Look below on the counter shaft. With the lid off, you should be able to slide the gearset toward the rear of the tractor and check for engagement onto the lower counter shaft gear.

I just re-read your second post... You are correct. I'm in the middle of a complete overhaul (bearings, seals and gears) of my 43 H and have replaced the 4th/5th slider. As Jim indicated the inner teeth for 5th were toast. Got an aftermarked new replacement throught Joe's Farmall Parts for $155, verses $600 from CIH and it fits perfectly!

Thanks to everyone....too add some closure for my own mind...it was the wrong gear. It fit on the shaft no problem. Whatever it come off of it isnt a 4/5 speed sliding gear for an H!! New gear obtained from ebay, installed and works perfectly. The original owner of the tractor died last summer, I wish I could ask him, i'm sure their was a story...

Should you be able to take off from a stop in 5th? Without winding it up and dumping the clutch? :S My MD and H certainly can't do it and I wouldn't want to try on my SMTA.
