Super M won't restart

I need some help! My 53 super m will not make any sound when I push the starter button. It was running 2 days ago shredding, but had a bad battery-"[u:161d45071b]red top optima; "-no warranty after 3 years[/u:161d45071b]-"...The following parts were added:
1 new battery
2 new alternator
3 new push start switch
4 new points,condenser,rotor.
5 new coil w/out internal resistor, but added in-line resistor-hooked it to + side going into coil.
6 Tried to start it by pulling with pickup, but did not fire.

...Do you think it's the on/off switch ?
...Or what ?

...Update Monday, no luck yet.
...Took starter off and will have it checked tomorrow.
...Will post results tomorrow night, THANKS TO ALL !!!!

Some places to start - I'm assuming the motor turns over but doesn't start. I would pull a spark plug and make sure you have spark. No spark could be the switch. Also make sure the rotor turns - there is a pin inside the distributor that is part of the drive unit for the distributor - if its sheared off nothing turns and no spark. Its easier to check electrical if you have a meter if you start looking at switches and wiring. If you have spark then I would look for a gas issue. If there is a plug in the carburetor remove it and let the gas run for a minute or so. If it stops flowing you have a plug somewhere - could be the float is stuck, gas line plugged up or possible the inlet in the tank has some junk plugging it. I'd suggest trying these things and get back to us if these things aren't the problem.

Pull off a plug wire and see if there's a good hot fire to your plugs. If there's no fire to your plug.

You need to to see if you have voltage at your coil. With points open and your ignition switch in the on position use a volt meter or test lite to see there's voltage on both terminals. If there's no voltage you need to check for battery voltage at your switch. Check the terminal on the switch that feeds voltage to the coil. You need the switch on. If there's no voltage you need to check for voltage being fed to your switch. You should have a feed wire that feeding battery voltage to your switch.

Use a separate wire to run battery voltage from the battery to your coil and see if it will start. This will bypass you ignition switch. Hal

...The carb has just been rebuilt by a top notch mechanic with a new kit and new float. The carb works great.
It gets gas, the bowl is full and flowing. It"s not a fuel issue.
It does not turn over at all when I push in on the start button.

Sunday follow up. " Today I checked the on/off switch with a test light and found that when the switch is pulled out/on, that I'm not getting any voltage past the start button.
So it appears that the on/off switch is BAD.
I'll replace that switch and see if she will fire up.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
I'll post the results tomorrow.....

Not clear, were all these new parts added after it would not start or was it running with them parts on and would not start after sitting a couple days. If later, most likely battery is dead and of course it would not start then even pulling as alt won't charge with out having current to excite it. Not much help but would need more info.

If I remember correctly the tractor will still turn over with the on off switch in the off position... The kill switch disrupts voltage to the coil creating no spark which will kill the motor. I don't believe it disrupts cranking voltage.

Were the parts other than the battery replaced prior to the no start problem or after??

..All new parts were installed "after" the optima battery failed.
The motor does not respond to any attempts to start it.
..Right now I'm leaning to the on/off switch being bad.
.. ???

Are you getting battery voltage to your starter button? Use a volt meter or test lite. Is there a solenoid on this tractor? If there's no voltage coming into your starter button you need to trace the wire that feeds battery voltage to it. Could be a broken wire or bad connection. If there's voltage feeding the starter button, see if there's voltage on the terminal that feeds voltage to the starter or solenoid when you press the starter button.

If there's voltage coming into the starter button and you don't find any voltage when the starter button is depressed, your starter butter is probably defective. Hal

Does your motor turn by hand - if not then either starter is jammed against the ring gear or you are locked in to gears in the transmission.

State has a good point. Don't remember if the SH has batt. under seat or not. The grounds at the back of batt. boxes had a bad reputation for rust/ corrosion. Check ground connections.

...Took the starter to be checked, and it would not do ANYTHING.
...i'M HAVING IT REBUILT, and it should be ready by Friday 25 th..
...I'll post the results to all, and THANKS AGAIN !

...THURSDAY 24Th UPDATE: Picked up rebuilt starter today, cost me $39.85 also added #1 gauge battery cables. The motor turns over really fast now...Thanks for yalls help! gatorhide
