M modified hydraulics

I have a 46 M with Super M pump, timing gear and cover. Insides of the Liftall are gone and it is used as a reservoir. Two questions. It whines a little. Any thoughts on that? Also is there any reason not to cap the fill spout vs. using the old vented cap? It spits fluid out the vented cap which is messy of course.

is the noise coming from the pump area or the res area ?

Valve area I think.

As long as the tank is vented somewhere, you can cap off the old vent. Otherwise remember that you are pumping oil in or out of the tank, creating pressure problems.

You might consider rearranging the return plumbing to be a straighter path. People usually just insert a T into the filler, and the return oil splashes real bad at the T, seeking to exit out the filler. With the felt inside the cap things are normally okay. Not great, but okay. If the cap is missing the felt, it gets ugly.

Thanks! That really helps. The cap has a fiber sponge type material in it. I will replace that with appropriate felt and check out the piping.
