farmall M question

Hi This is a totally stupid question, but what is the purpose of a swinging drawbar. I have heard somewhere that the drawbar can be set to float 'free' from left to right, but I don't understaand what advantage this offers. I want to pull a two bottom trailer plow with my M and was wondering if letting the drawbar swing is the right way to go.

thanks Wally

Wally :
I would leave the drawbar in the center, unless the plow does not throw the turnover sod next to the right rear tire....then you might wnt to shift the drawbar to the right and secure with a pin. If the two bottom plow (what size?) is matched to the "M" then the thing should work just fine in the center. You want you right tires to "drop-in" the furrow so that sod is plowed without any "skips" or bare spots.
Good Luck !!

The swinging drawbar was a big help when it came to turning in loose soil while pulling a disk. As the tractor turned, it allowed the load to pull to the "inside" of the arc scribed by the tractor. Back in the day when many tractors were on steel wheels, the swinging drawbar often made a critical difference in turning.
They are also very handy when hitching to a loaded grain wagon that doesn't have a telescoping hitch. And, they can be used for hitching a gravity wagon "off-center" to make it easier to line up with an elevator.
