I have a 1940 H with a 6V generator and voltage regulator, positive ground system. Nothing is connected to the 'L' terminal of the VR.
The system will not charge the battery.
I went through the usual votage regulator checks. When I connected the 'ARM' terminal to the 'Bat' terminal the ammeter showed a 15A discharge rather than staying close to zero or going positive. The rest of the checks had no effect.
I had put new brushes in the generator recently. If I connect the field terminal to the generator case and hook the negative battery terminal to the 'ARM' terminal and the positive battery terminal to the generator case, the generator spins fairly slowly. When I remove the wire from the field terminal, it speeds up.
I substituted a new 6V, + gnd, VR and it did not charge either.
Any idea what to check next ? Or even better, what's wrong ?
Thanks
Greg
