140 Steering wheel.

Need to pull the steering wheel. Perhaps some previous person boggered the threads for the two bolts to hold the puller. The holes are obviously for 1/4" bolts, but neither 1/4-20 nor 1/4-28 bolts will engage more than couple of threads. I want to clean up the threads with a tap and using the original size is very important for thread strength. Highly unlikely to be metric on 1958 USA tractor. Anyone know the correct thread size?

I forgot to mention that this steering wheel has no exposed metal spokes. All exposed parts are black plastic with a plastic center cap covering the nut and puller bolt holes.

I could not discover how to edit the original post.

I would use a wire bottle brush (small ones are made to clean internal threads) and then use a thread pitch gauge on the threads to determine the pitch. It looks like a feeler gauge set with multiple swinging tiny saw blades in it, each with a different pitch. Jim

I suspect the first few threads in each hole are sufficiently messed up that he can't reach any threads that are good enough to measure. That was probably from someone previously using bolts with the wrong pitch.

Every tractor from the 140 through at least the 660 used the same steering wheel so somebody must know what the thread pitch is.

A small hard wood stick will also be useful.
Choose a bark free twig a little less than a 1/4" in diameter, dip it in some oil, and screw it into the hole. When it comes out it will have an imprint of the threads on it! Jim

Well i have done 2 of them and both i had to cut off. A nice thin blade on a hand grinder works very good. You just have to cut the one side and it will come right of. A new steering wheel is not to pricey as long as you dont buy it from case ih. Erik..

I am laid up recovering from knee surgery, so i can't go out and measure the threads. But what I did when I pulled mine was to use a bearing splitter. It popped right off no problem. You might try it if you can't get the screw holes to work.

From what I can find on the CaseIH parts site, the part no. for the 140 steering wheel that looks like the newer style (molded plastic covering the steel) is 366557R2

The part no. according to the parts site for the steering wheel on my 340 is 366557R1.

I just pulled my steering wheel to access under the dash to up-grade the electrical to 12 volts. Used 1/4 x 20 bolts in the steering wheel.

If the wheel hasn"t been of in a while or ever, plenty of patience & monkey pee.

Hope this info is helpful. Happy 4th.
