H engine question.

Hey guys, I am finishing an engine for my H. My question is there is a threaded hole in one of the oil galley ports that is cast into the inside of the block. There is no plug in it now. I thought there was before the block went to the machine shop. Do any of you guys know what I'm talking about?? I don't want to put it together wrong and have the thing lock up from no oil presure. HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

Can you describe in a little more detail the location where the plug is missing? I am assuming it somewhere on the outside of the block?

There are some allen-head plugs to close off the ends of the drilled oil passages in the block. If you had the block cleaned at the shop, it is possible that they may have removed the plug to make sure they got the oil gallery cleaned properly.

I believe it is to be plugged with a hex drive pipe plug. The person that did the engine should have put it back. (but was correct in pulling it out) Check with them!! Jim

I think what you are looking at is the drain for the oil filter. There should be an 1/8" pipe, about six inches long in that hole. The oil filter on an H is a bypass type filter. Any oil going through the filter is returned to the oil pan. The amount of oil going through the filter is metered by a small hole in the long bolt that holds the filter canister in place. If you plug the drain hole you will not have any oil flow through the filter.
