Farmall 300 Belt Pulley

I've got my 300 apart and I am considering leaving the belt pulley off when I put tractor back together. This seems to be the most practical thing to do - would this be a mistake?

I left the belt pulleys (entire drive not just pulley itself) off my three tractors. Made a plate to fit. Much easier to get in and take a peek at transmission if need be and the real reason I left them off is that I got tired of squeezing between them and tire when you work on tractor. If you have a tractor like a 400 or 450 with the larger fuel tank the pulley drive is a real pain to get off. Did that for 50 years now on customers tractors. No, I am not a big guy, 160 lbs max.

If you keep the tractor, and do not even consider using the drive for flat belt attachments (or anything) leave it off. Make a plate to cover the hole out of 16 gauge steel. Make a template by using tag board and a ball peen hammer to tap around the drive attachment surface, including the holes, then cut it out for a perfect copy. Then make a gasket the same way. Save the drive for eventual sale with the tractor, or a discovered use. Jim

I have been thinking of doing the same thing on my 300. Is the pattern the same as the "H" so a delete plate from an "H" will fit on a 300?
I have a few of those laying around the shop, just haven"t found time to try it yet.. I could also scan a full size pattern if someone needed it.

Yes, the 300 and H delete plates are the same.

I guess I don't see eye-to-eye with those who want to install a delete plates. I like the idea of multi function, multi power-source vehicles. Power out the back, power out the side, power out the top for Electralls, power off the front of crankshaft, and beaucoup hydraulics. I would only remove a belt pulley gearbox if I were installing an Elwood, cotton picker PTO, or that rare underdrive that recently sold on eBay.

Here is some of what you can do with the space occupied by the belt pulley gearbox or the gearbox itself
