460 Injector pump timing..etc..

Anyone know how to check timing on a 460 diesel injector pump? i've tried everything trying to get the old tractor to run again, finding out this weekend the guy i bought it from said he had the pump off and wasnt sure if he got the timing set exactly where it should be? But it pull started with some starting fluid and seem to run fine. i want to get it running by the key. This is what i have done to rule these things out. New batteries 2 12v , new key switch , push buttons, new glow plugs, new final hose from last fuel filter to pump, adjusted valves to cold gap,new battery cables, rebuilt starter, new fuel filters, blew through fuel return line, cracked all injectors and got all air out. it sound like it hits every 8 or so turn overs. But it just doesnt seem like it turns over fast enough like something is dragging it down.. i own three diesel's 1 small ford tractor a 94 cummins truck and a 86 int. dump truck w/cummins. i've never had any kind of problems with working on them but this tractor is driving me nuts.. if someone could give me advice i'll give you number and maybe you could call or just post your opinion. sorry about the long post i'm just lost on this one thanks !!

Check the cables after you crank for a while. If they are warm, they are too small. Also check all connections for warmth. Any warm ones need to be cleaned & tightened. There is a timing window on the pump with marks that should line up when on TDC. It has been a while since I timed one so if this is wrong, someone will correct it. Make sure the glow plugs are working. Use them instead of ether.

well if you pull started it with starting fluid and it ran fine. that kinda tells the story then . plus starting fluid is a no no espesially with glow plugs. were you holding glow plugs and useing starting fluid? thats a good way to screw things up!did you check to see if you had power to the plugs? just because you put new plugs in dont mean anything.they could be toast now though! plus i have never seen 6 burn out at the same time.thats if starting fluid was not used. these engines start easy when everything is in order.is the starter dragging? if you have starter rpm, glow plug heat, and fuel she'll start.

After you have had the glow plugs on for 45 - 60 seconds does it start within a few feet when you pull it? If not you have compression or fuel delivery issues. Until it starts readily by pulling it you are not going to get it to start well on batteries.

well i pulled it down the gravel road maybe 1/2 and it fired up. pump must be out of time because it would barely climb a hill in front of my house in 5th. it was rolling a lot of smoke (black) little blue and a bunch of white before it fired off. anyways i had to down shift it to finish the hill . everything seemed ok till i was going up the hill and it fell on its face. now i just need to know how to set the timing right on the pump... any links to manuals or anything like that would be great. thanks for all the help guys it really put a smile on my face when it fired back up after so much work and confusion..
