Super H Alternator

The Hitachi from a mid 80s Nissan Pu is a great choice. It is small enough to allow some adjustment.
A Delco10SI will fit, but touch both the hood and block, making belt adjustment less desirable.
The Hitachi has 3 terminals, the big stud goes to the Amp meter (load side)
the S terminal goes directly to the stud, and the L terminal goes to a diode, idiot light, or 10 ohm 10 watt resistor), then to the ignition switch. The diode should be 3 amp, 50 PIV with the band marking on the end attached to the L terminal. These three options keep the tractor from running with the key off. Jim

The Delco Remy 10si is the cheapest. It is full size and will fit. Clearances are very tight and you have to get the belt length just right. Hitachi makes one that is much smaller, better clearances, and easier to install. It is the one they sell as a kit specifically for the H/SH. I bought the kit and was happy with the alternator but the brackets supplied looked like a chinese jigsaw puzzle once assembled. I didn't like them. I did use them as a guide and fabbed up a much cleaner looking bracket. I installed the Delco on an H and the Hitachi on my SH. Search the archives. There's alot of pictures and information referencing how to do this.

I used the Hitachi 14231 alternator along with the original H generator mounting bracket and didn"t even have to change from the original generator belt. I thought it was a very simple change and you have significant clearances for adjustment with out touching the valve cover or the hood. I wouldn"t even consider trying to make a Delco 10SI work after how easy the Hitachi installation was. I bought a rebuilt Hitachi alternator at the auto parts store for $50 plus a $10 core charge since I didn't have an exchange. The 14231 was used on the 1978 - 1980 Nissan 620 and 720 pick-up trucks with a 2 liter engine and maybe other models as well. The Delco 10SI works fine on a Farmall M but is just too big to "fight with" on the H unless you are determined to make it work and use one. Hope this helps, Hal.
