Farmall M head

What is the difference between the Gasoline and distillate heads on the Farmall m, How can they be interchanged

I believe distillate engines had a lower compression ratio so I would imagine at the least they have bigger combustion chambers, which could probably be ratified with a dome top piston.

The distillate head is lower compression than the gasoline head. Other than that there is very little difference and the 2 will readily interchange. Putting the distillate head on a gasoline engine will result in less horsepower, but depending on how the tractor is used, you may not notice any differance.

like rusty said the combustion chamber is a lot deeper and that makes the valves shorter. there is quite a difference in power. m+w made pistons with a inch tall dome to raise the compression on a low compression engine. useing a distillate head will turn your m into an h for power.
