Painting Question

I've read the archives and think that I am going to use the Dupont Nason line. I think the Fulthane, if I remember right. Paint is for a 48 Farmall C. I showed my painter guy my sheet metal today, and he said a two stage would be better than a single stage paint.

I had planned to have the whole tractor painted in a single stage paint. I definitely don't want to clear coat the whole tractor. Would it look dumb to have the sheet metal two-staged and the rest of the tractor single staged?

I am thinking I should go with my gut and have the whole thing shot in single stage Dupont Nason, but wanted to check with your folks first. Any help is appreciated.

Using Dupont paint code 7410, which should cross to IH50, if I've read these forums correct. Thanks in advance for your guy's help!

Two part means paint plus hardener. Two stage means base/clear. I have started using base/clear, but only because I have to sand and buff to get rid of the lint, etc that settles in my paint. (probably I am too picky) The clear in the base/clear system is much easier to buff than single stage, at least it is for me. Otherwise there is no real advantage. As to the sheet metal base/clear and the rest single stage, I have done that. There is little or no color difference, the toners (mixing) tints are the same, but they are not in the same ratio, so the possibility of a color difference does exist. The main difference is the stuff in the can that you add the toners to. A perfect color match is not guaranteed, but I have not had that problem so far.

Thanks Guys. CNKS - Have you run into any problems clear coating the whole tractor? How easy is it for a non-painter to touch up nicks and wear spots with the BC/CC method compared to a single stage paint?

PS - Can't believe I have never posted on here before this time. Seems like I have been reading these forums forever, learning as much as I could before I started tearing into the tractor.

I haven't done that on clear coat yet. You could use the base on small nicks and forget the clear. But, I would probably keep a little single stage that has a close enough color match. The nicks won't look perfect no matter how you do it, on the sheet metal. Blends in much better on cast.
