international 1566 transmission

I looked at a international 1566 today which is for sale the only problem is with the transmission, I was told 2nd gear does not work, but it appears that the medium range is not working. It feels like it is in range, but when you let the clutch out it starts to grind any ideas on the problem or cost to fix?
 
Second gear IS the medium range.

If the problem is just in the linkage it may cost a couple hundred to repair it. If it needs gears and bearings replaced you could well be looking at several thousand.
 
It does not have a medium range. Just Hi - Lo range and reverse with three speeds. Some times the nut on the counter shaft comes off in the transmission but then you wont have 1st gear in any range, Hi. Lo. or Reverse. You are not refering to medium range being the TA the leaver on the left side? If it only has 2nd gear not working in any range, HI-LO-Rev sounds like some teeth gone. Is the grinding only when it's in 2nd gear?
 
thanks for the replies, the TA seems to be working fine. there was no cover for the shifting levers on the right side which has the range lever on the outside and the gear selector lever on the inside. I am not overly familar with the transmission set up on this one since the farmall 706 we have the gear is a straight slide, not like this gear selectorwhic his sliding, but has to the left and right. So this tansmission only has a low and high range then the torque amplifier for the high and low side in each gear. I this is the case the gear selector will not shift into one of the gears in either hi or low range. Possibly a shifting fork? I would like to find a diagram on the internet of the range and gear selector pattern, but I have not been able to find one. I would like to buy this tractor, but not knowing how much I would have to put into the transmission is scaring me.
