fan pulley and set screw

Today I was going to put the new generator belt on the Farmall M. I looked at the fan pulley and found a set screw. When I tried to unscrew the set screw, I couldn't get it to turn. I was able to get a 9/16" socket on the nut on the set screw, but one of the fan blades got in the way of putting a socket wrench on it there. I tried to turn the socket with vise grips, but the vise grips always slipped around the socket. Do you have any suggestions for how to get the set screw out?

The hex nut is a lock nut, not the set screw. I think the set screw has a screwdriver slot or a square head. First you must loosen the lock nut. Use lots of penetrant (PB Blaster). You don't say what socket drive size you used. It it was 1/2 inch drive, try a smaller drive like 3/8 or 1/4 drive. The smaller drive size will take less space and be easier to get a handle on. Let the PB blaster soak a while first..and use a 6 point socket, not a 12 point because you don't want to round off the pointson the nut. If the smaller drive size sockets are not deep enough to go over the set screw, then use a deep well socket.

A good quality box/ combination wrench is the only way I've gotten this jam nut loose. Like Haas says ---use lots of penetrant. You may have to heat the unit to get it started. May have to bump the hub both ways to get the pin loose.

Yes. That setscrew sets down into one of several slots in the threaded portion of the hub, and if the screw is right against the edge of that slot it might be creating more resistance. Having said that, the only way I could ever get one loose is by heating it up.

after you get the screw out try buying a cap screw thats one with a allen head you might want to put a small point on the end not a sharp point just bevele the tip i did this to make it easier to adjust in the future. be careful no to break the pulley
