Steering Bolster?

For those of you who may have followed my post from last week about removing the vertical steering shaft from an H ... I finally got the thing out yesterday. Thanks for all the help - you guys were right - just hit it HARD. The steering bolster (the bowl that holds the oil) is worrying me now. It's not been full of oil since I've had the tractor. There must be a seal somewhere that keeps the oil in the bolster and prevents it from emptying down the vertical steering shaft. Where is that seal and how do I get at it? I'd like to replace it before I put the whole thing back together to prevent later headaches. Thanks.

I don't believe there is a seal for it just a felt seal. I filled mine up a while ago because I thought it was a little low and what I put in just leaked back out behind the worm gear. I looked on the case ih website and there diagram showed just the felt

David If you look down in the bowl that holds the oil, you will see a split seeve in the top of the hole. Just punch that out, it ought to be replaced anyway, and the seal will come out with it. available at your friendly IH dealer. I made a seal driver that fits the bore of the hole to drive it back in. There is an oil seal at the bottom of the gear case, just below the bushing. It is a royal pain to install a new seal. I replaced that seal on my M, filled the gear case up with 80-90 gear oil and it all leaked out after a few weeks, so I just crammed it full of grease. Corn head grease is a good choice for this, it is a heavy, sticky grease.

I think we need to clarify that the upper housing or top of bolster has a seal below the bushing right under the gear, this seals the top housing for gear oil, we always tell customer to put gun grease in if it leaks gear oil, the felt washer goes below under a tin formed retainer on the thrust bearing on top of the lower big bushing in the bottom of bolster, it was just to help keep dirt out of the lower thrust bearing. I remember the parts diagram was vague.

I to did away with the oil and went with the grease route.as there very little movement in the steering to worry about liq.lube grease will work just find just make sure you pack it good around the gears need not full the whole bowl. good luck.(glad you found your problem) former IH dealer mech. john
