Grill for Farmall H

Guys,

I have purchased a grill off ebay for our FFA Raffle tractor, has some work done to get is perfect. Looks great, the question is what is the difference between early h grills and late?? Someone walked in the shop and said "holy crap that is a perfect 38 grill" How do you tell??? The tractor is a 1951, will it work? Would I be better to replace it with correct one or what ??

It is already painted and in perfect shape. but not mounted on the tractor.
 
I think someone is messing with you because they didn't start making them until 1939 and the only difference I know of would be the smaller IH on front of a super H instead of FARMALL likes on the regular H.
 
My Farmall H parts catalog TC-27E shows a change in grilles at s/n 49750 and up. It appears the change is in how the grille is attached to the chassis. Prior to s/n 49750 the catalog calls out four fastener springs secured to the grille with rivets eight places (probably two at each spring location) and beginning at s/n 49750 they are installed with four screws. I thought there might be some difference at the radiator cap opening as the early ones might not have had the "keyhole" type cutout. You might want to do a "pre-fit" of the grille to the chassis to see if the attaching screws will line up and everything looks correct. the early h grills had the dzues fasteners and also the ones before pressure radiators had no slot for the overflow tube.

Exactly. Although the dzus fasteners are not a problem because the holes are in the same place and you can use the bolts instead, but the lack of the slot for the radiator overflow tube is a problem, but that could also be remedied if you are determined enough.
