Hi guys. Would any of you trust aftermarket parts for IH tractors. I am specifically looking at front steering parts for 66/86 and trasmissions gears for 4speed. I was thinking A&I but I have heard some complaints. Is it worth the risk or am I just being too cheap. Thanks for your opinions.

I replaced the front wheel bearings on my 1950 H last fall just before snow pushing season. I got the bearing kit from A&I. Everything fit just like original and I've had NO problems. I've also sold maybe 20 of those same kits and I've never had a complaint.

Actually, unless you find some new old stock parts, most of the parts you get, even from the manufacturer, ie: Case/IH, JD, for older antique tractors are actually "after market parts". In most instances the parts that were originally made by IH, Case, or JD are now made for them by some supplier as it would cost them too much to tool up to produce a few slow moving antique parts.

At one time, a long time ago, International Harvester DID have their own bearing factory, but even then they still did not produce ALL the bearings they needed, the rest were purchased from an independent bearing manufacturer such as Timken and a few others. I have purchased bearing from A&I as well as Tisco, and some of those bearings WERE Timken.

Aftermarket parts are hit or miss.

A&I tie rods and bushings for the front end of my H are as heavy duty as the originals and seem to be of reasonable quality.

Aftermarket brake bands for the H are absolute junk. Bolt holes on replacement seats may or may not all line up (3 out of ain't bad...).

You can only tell once you have the part in your hand and check it out. If it would be a lot of work to replace a failed aftermarket part, I would not be afraid to pay a little more.

I have very good results from the A&I aftermarket brake bands. The lining is made from the same material as the original, and it is riveted, not bonded.

we do a fair amount of repairs on 66 and 86 series transmissions. we ussually try to get our gaers from hycap or agparts, but have used a & i gears also. have never had a problem, and actually cant tell who made what. we know what to buy where and what not to buy. front end and three point hitch stuff no one will ever catch A&I. brakes, pretty much better off with oem, if its for heavy use. hycap and ag parts have great hydraulic pumps. all these companys have their strengths and weaknesses.

The problem I had with the aftermarket bands was that they were 3/8" too long. The adjuster would have to be shorter than the available amount of adjustment to make them work.

The other problem was that the top eye was just a loop of the backing material, not a seperate heavy rivited on clevis. The spot welds on the eye would break and then there would be no brake.

If you fixed that problem, eventually, if you realy use the brakes to turn and such, the top pin tears through the eye. That leads to no brakes again.

Maybe they have fixed those problems. If so, that's good news.

The brake bands from A&I have that top loop riveted in place. They are a dead ringer for originals.
