cutting an H head

I have got my engine tore apart putting new sleeves and putting fire crater pistons in it. Somebody told me I should have the head cut also. How much could I have cut off of it without causing problems?

I would not shave the head. If you want more compression, use a 300 or 350 LP head, more HP gain with less work.

Been looking for one of the two but can't find anything in
our area. Just went over the weekend and checked the
tractor salvage yards again but no luck.

It won't hurt to get it cut just to make sure it is flat !

I had a 8060 "M" head cut .125 and that was to much ,it caused cracks to start forming.

I have a 450 gas head that was cut .040 and that has worked fine.

Keep in mind that when you cut the head there is a point that you will have to put spacers under the rocker arm pedestals to bring the adjustment back into the rockers.

Do a search on this topic i'm sure this has been asked before.

It should never be shaved anymore than needed to make it flat.

if you have a good head you can take at least .080 off without much issue. I took over .100 off on a Super H with fire craters in it not a problem. Actually .130 was possible according to the machine shop.

I'm with the idea, only remove enough to clean it up, the way those water passages are formed you get to making them wider with every little bit you take off and then weaken the head. I have(years ago) installed high altitude fire crater pistons. That really brings up the comp ratio. Don't know if they are still available . Also, you will need to adjust your timing advance curve with any fire crater piston.
