dead in the water

I puchased my grandfather's C after 20 years out of the family. It's been in a lean-to for several years. I can crank start it fairly easily. I've replaced the battery, had the starter rebuilt by a very reputible outfit (it works), and put some big guage cables on it. In addition, although the generator and regulator are still the original items, I've rewired all that--to ammeter, starter, and resistor. I cannot get the starter to so much as fart once installed on the tractor. Disconnecting the genny lead from the starter does not do any good. My understanding of the starting cicuit is the battery (+ ground), switch (new as well), and the starter. Is there anything that would interrupt or defeat the juice to the starter? HELP!!! Losing my mind.

Sounds like a ground problem to me. About once every 2 years on my 140 either the starter or the solenoid loses ground and I need to reinstall them - this cleans the bolt threads and they mae good contact.

Genny lead to the starter????? You should not have the genny hooked to the starter in any way shape or form. As a test you can hook the battery right to the starter with one of the battery cables off and it out of gear then hook the battery cable on that you have off and the starter should spin over. If it does not then you eight have a poor connection some place or your rebuilt starter is bad

My H does this once in a while. I have to take starter off and clean the mating surfaces for good contact. I would agree it seems to be a ground or connection problem. Allan.

Under the starter switch on the starter there is a copper terminal. This terminal becomes part of the switch contacts when the switch is mechanically moved with the starter rod. The terminal is not making contact with the switch. Use a chainsaw file or small rat tail file to oval the mounting hles on the switch so that it moves closer to the terminal (usually a half hole diameter is needed)
This allows current flow. Be sure to follow the real wiring diagram (from Bob M in the archives) to assure correct wiring, Jim

According to the schematic, the generator feeds to the ammeter and the lead from the ammeter goes to the starter. That's how the battery gets current from the charging system. Have one off the internet and the original manual. Both show it as such.

Ok so the starter has the pull type switch on it so I understand now your just picking up power there. So then you probably have a bad connection some place then

Got her up and running using the electric start this past Saturday. Thanks to all for you help. Went to 00 cables and grounded to the starter. Also reinstalled orginal switch. A-Ok now. Thanks again!
