I have a 140 with fast hitch,my question is when finished using a rear implement (such as disk harrow or rotary cutter) should you leave in the up postion or lower it to the ground?

I was taught to always lower stuff to the ground and relieve all hydraulic pressure. This was for SAFETY...if for no other reason!! Makes no difference whether its a 1-pt. implement or a combine header...ALWAYS let stuff down.

Read your owners manual. It says to lower/retract the piston rods so they will be in oil instead of outside the touch control unit exposed to air.

I confess I have never been sure. If there is no implement on my 140, I leave the pistons retracted as the manual directs. But when I have my snow plow on, where piston is extended when plow is down, but really heavy in the air, I put it down (on a couple of 2x4's in winter, so it won't freeze to the ground.) I figure that, since I start it once a week and cycle the hydraulics anyway, that removing the stress is better than leaving the pistons in oil 24/7. I would like to hear from others on this.

In any case, I have never had to do anything to the hydraulics other than change fluid and clean filter every ten years or so since new in 1966.
