Farmall A charging system

So I am a little confused about the charging system on my A. It has the HLBD switch but also has a regulator on the generator. I am getting no charge from the generator and am thinking it is the voltage regulator. Does the HL positions on the light switch have anything to do with charging if you have a voltage regulator? Fill me in please!!!

At some point earlier in its life the original cutout was replaced with a voltage regulator. So presuming the VR is wired correctly the light switch "L" and "H" positions are now simply two alternate "off" positions for the lights. Thus the switch setting now has no effect the charge rate - that's now for the to the VR to perform.

You might try printing the generator/regulator troubleshooting chart (link below) then following it through to identify the problem.

NOPE, as Bob n others noted if it now has a correctly wired VR, the LH is no longer in the equation and there should NOT be a wire from the LHBD down to the Gennys FLD post, the gennys FLD now wires to FLD on the VR. Make sure shes wired right and that BOTH the VR and Genny have good grounds and then run Bob and my Troubleshooting Procedures, take two aspirins n call us Monday at the office.

Charging Troubleshooting

Some regs used the LH sw for charging. I bought a B 25yrs ago that is wired that way and works good as i havent changed anything it is my most used tractor with loader and removes snow and lifting lots of stuff.

Some old Cutout Relays had 3 terminals BAT GEN and FLD but those arent really considered Voltage Regulators, just Cutout Relays that supplied a ground for the gennys FLD in tractors that DID NOT use a Low High charge light switch. If they used a LHBD low/high light switch and didnt have a VR only a cutout, then the Gennys FLD post is wired to that switch which supplies a resistive ground for Low charge or a direct ground for High charge. If it uses a full fledged VR (3 or 4 terminal) the gennys FLD wires to the VR ONLY NOT any light switch. HOWEVER if you went ahead n wired the gennys FLD to a Low High light switch it can still make her charge as it (NOT the VR) supplies the ground albeit not an auto regulation system (like with a VR) but a manual regulation system

The I-H cutouts were wired field on gen to field on cutout A to the Gen terminal and of course batt to batt. There are several regs sold for replacements and the ones i get for the 1101355 and 1101423 gens use a seperate coil on the field terminal and doesent use a wire going to the lite sw. They are made in USA and the guy who makes them had a very good article in RED POWER mag about the replacements of the reg cutout to the reg. The tractor i was refering to was that way when i got it 25yrs ago and it does charge more on H it hasent caused any problems so i aint going to mess with it who would know its maker was but as long as it works im leaving it hands off. I wire the cutouts field on the gen to field on the cutout like when new and they work just fine. Just did two in the last 30days. The one did cause some new tricks as the tag was red original and all that stuff never seen a red tag 6v pos gnd before. Owner got it from his Dad and will restore it. Very nice original tractor. 46 B.
