Farmall 504 stuck in first gear!

Hey folks! Trying to get a 1968 Farmall 504 in good working order after it"s been sitting outside for at least 18 mos. Got it running, drove it around in 1st and reverse, then stopped for a while to celebrate. When I got back on I found that the stick is frozen in first gear. Will not budge.
How should I troubleshoot? My instinct is to change the transmission fluid and lubricate the clutch according to the manual. Is that a good start, and what are the most likely causes of this problem?

If it has a TA, it may be out of adjustment. Try pulling the TA lever back and try to shift. Otherwise it is probably stuck in two gears. Not familiar with a 504, but you might be able to get to the shift rails by removing the shifter. You may be able to pry one loose. If that works, the shifter prongs need attention, requiring the top cover to be removed. It probably is not the fluid or the clutch.

I have a 504 and that happened to me. Take the shifter off and realien the slots. The tip of the shifter wears off. I built the end up with a welder and filed it square. Have not had that problem since. Make sure that gasket is good because water will get in through there.

This happens to my 560 all the time. Not sure if 504 is the same, but for mine I do have to take the shifter off, push in the clutch and re-align the gears. Real easy fix. Mine has 3 rails and my trouble is that not only was the shifter tip worn, but the rails themselves. Welding up the shifter tip did help alot, but still have to be gentle when shifting or she gets stuck again.

Matt,

If the oil is the problem, it's too late to change it. The damage has been done. Changing the oil is a good idea if the tractor is new to you, but don't expect it to fix any issues.

I doubt if it's a lubrication problem, though.

Does the tractor move, or die when you let out the clutch?

If it moves, it's probably the TA being out of adjustment. Pull the TA lever and it will shift.

If it dies, it's stuck in two gears at once. Remove the shift lever and realign the shift forks through the hole as prescribed.
