Farmall H Buzzsaw and Magneto

I am restoring my '49 Farmall H. I am looking for a mounted buzzsaw if anyone can give me an idea about finding one.

Also, my H has the original magneto but has been bypassed by a 6v volt automotive coil. I assume the magneto quit working and the previous went the cheap route. Can I repair the magneto or do i need to buy a new one?

If there are no major parts missing or badly damaged, a competant magneto shop ought to be able to repair it.

You also may be able to use it as a core to trade in for a rebuilt magneto. There were hundreds of thousands of that model magneto made (the IH H4) and the same mag was used on everything from A's to M's & probably more, so they are readily availble in many places.

Most likely the original magneto coil went bad, and that mag coil is a bit more costly than the coil that you have now, but probably a new mag coil will make it fully functional again.

Buzz saws aren't UPS-able so you need to indicate your location. I have two but don't know if you are near enough to eastern Mass to be interested. A Cub saw recently sold for $300+ on eBay.

I am in Southern Maryland. There is a mounted saw on YT photo ads for a $100 that is in Vermont but it is a 1,200 mile round trip. I think eastern Mass is about a 1,000 mile round trip. I guess I need to find one nearby.

I spent a lot of time [throwing away] from one when i was a kid! For bigger stuff and a crew, the H i think is a little small and the sliding platform is too much work? Nice to keep moving the saw to the pile instead of the pile to the saw!! I think our old F-20 ran a saw better than a H?? Bud.

Hey Devin,

Don't know how much of a road trip you are willing to make, but I have one off an M that I will give you. Charlotte, NC + 20 miles.

I rebuilt the mag in my H with extensive advice and help from kind folks like Janicholson and others. It is not too hard of a job, the worst part is waiting for the parts to come in the mail.

Devin,
All good advice on this one.
In my opinion mags are way better than coil/dist. systems.
Have your mag rebuilt to original and it will last a long long time and start even when the battery is low.
