IHC C fowling plugs

I have a 1950 C tractor that keeps fowling cylinders 3 and especially #4. They are black with soot. Cylinder 1 and 2 are OK. I have had the carb rebuilt, checked the oil bath air cleaner(even took the wire mesh out from around the air cleaner body. When it sits and idles a little black smoke is visible coming from the exhaust which tells me it has too much fuel. Could I have an ignition problem instead of gas?? I am using D21 plugs. thanks

Things that can help reduce that "gas" fouling.

Get and keep the temp up to 180 and over

Run hotter spark plugs

Use non resistor plugs

Use wire core plug wires

Dont run the carb any richer then necessary

Keep the ignition well tuned with a good hot
blue spark and timed correct.

Avoid long periods of idling

I can't say it is the plugs, but many people stay away from Champion Plugs. I have come to the same opinion and have quit using Champion. It seems like I get much better performance from AutoLite 3116 plugs.
If the problem is the ignition, it could be a bad condenser or coil causing a cold spark. Are you using resistive plug wires?
What's the condition of the engine? Have you checked compression? I am not a real believer in additives, but I have heard that SeaFoam is a good overhaul in a can. SeaFoam may help resolve sticky rings or valves if low compression is the problem.

In my opinion Champion plugs are worthless. I have had excellent results with AC C87 for 30 years.
Beyond that, try swapping the plugs from 1 / 2 with 3 / 4 and see what happens.

A new set of Champion plugs lasted 2 hr in my SC, the ACs have been in it for 8 years.

thanks for all your replies. Looks like I should change brand of plug and double check the ignition. The engine has been overhauled so I don't think the problem is internal.

probably your biggest problem is that its just not getting to operating temp. which is the biggest thing that fouls plugs.you cant blame it on champion or autolite or any other brand as they will all foul up just idling around. need to get her under load and work it at least every so often.

Everyone has an opinion on spark plugs and oil. I bought my H 3 years ago. Put new wires, points, cap, coil etc. New Autolite plugs. After a very short time one fouled out, then another. I put the old Champion plugs back in & it's still running fine 2 years later.
I also have a cub I rebuilt. It sat for about 10 years. I rebuilt the engine and put the old Champion plugs that were in it back in. It ran great all summer. Did a lot of mowing.

Installing NEW plugs in an OLD engine invariably will loosen up some of the carbon in the cylinders, and sometimes a tiny speck of that carbon will get lodged between the spark plug tip and the electrode, thus making that plug non-functional. It is NOT the fault of the spark plug. It is the dirty old engine that caused it. When this happens, just remove the offending plug, clean that little speck of carbon out so there is a gap again, and you're good to go. The reason the OLD Champions worked when you re-installed them is because the carbon had already been knocked loose

Champion spark plugs are the only brand that I have found to occasionally be bad right out of the box.
