I have 1939 Farmall H has been running well all fall suddenly started running rough like it is not getting fuel I took the fuel line apart replaced the sediment bulb screen replaced some of the line it will start runs real rough occassionally back fires will not rev at all is it the carb or electrical

You need to do some trouble shooting. What your describing could be caused by a multitude of things. Don't get tunnel vision at this point. Sounds more like an ignition problem than fuel. I would start by checking the plugs for partial fowling, and points and condenser, rotor and cap. Check your ignition harness a see if its breaking down and either cross firing or grounding out intermittently. I'd start with that and see where it takes me. LarryT

There is also a fine mesh filtering screen inside the carburetor. It is attached to the brass fitting where the fuel line attaches. Use a 5/8" wrench and remove that fitting and clean the screen. If that doesn't cure it, you need to dig into the carburetor itself.

I had the same problem with a 48 H. Turned out it was the magneto coil. I'd say check the ignition items mentioned and check your spark. It needs a good strong spark which mine didn't have. Once the coil was change it had a very strong spark.

I would start with 4 new plugs as it probably needs new ones anyway. When you take out the old ones lay them in a row so you know whick cycl they came from. A good visual check can tell a bunch. Then while they are out do a compression check. Now you hae a good idea of where the problem mite be and you havent wasted any money.

You have gotten good advice.
1. If you have black/blue smoke you have a stuck choke or something clogging the air intake causing too rich mixture.
2. I had a 41H that did the same thing and I rebuilt the mag and it ran great every since.
3. Might be ignition, plugs, wires, points, etc.
4. Remove the main jet in the carb and blow a little air in. Might be debris.
Troubleshoot and eliminate.

This could be caused by freezing temps--check the air cleaner cup for ice/ water in the bottom. Our A had this problem & I went through the ignition & carb, only to eventually find ice in the cup.

I had a similar problem with a Case SC. Ran great one day and suddenly ran terrible and could not figure out why. Went through everything, carb, mag, anything I could think of. Finally put in new plugs and has run perfect ever since. Sometimes the easiest solution works. Good luck, Allan.

Set the points to .020" on a high point of cam. wiggle the distributor shaft sideways, not in and out. if you can feel any wiggle it is too much. Max would be .001 measured with a dial indicatr. Worn bushings will cause wild timing variations. Jim
