What I found when the tractor arrived

My new tractor is like Johnny Cash's Cadillac. The serial tag is for a mid 1946 distillate H, the rear end/transmission case and axle housings are Y castings which indicate a 1953 Super H if I remember right. The trans top cover is a K casting if I remember right, clutch housing is an N and the best I can make out the block is a capital I, if they ever used that. The head is an 8043 DC which seems to be a gas H head as far as I can tell from research on here. I am wondering if the internal parts of the transmission area will be different from an H to a stage 1 super and if they are how I can tell. I'm going out now while the daylight lasts to try to move the loader onto my H and see if it is functional. One more question-would I find it beneficial to swap the 8043 DC gas head onto my H work tractor in place of the 8776 DA (as I recall) distillate head that it now has on it? Thank you very much for any advice on these matters.

I wouldn't go swapping the heads unless:

1. The current head is giving you problems.

AND AND AND

2. You are 100% positive the "new" head is good.

No sense in swapping out a perfectly good head for a piece of junk.
 
Month on the rear housing is later than a late H would be so it may have the SH gears unless they installed the H transmission parts in.
If your old H has the standard gears, jack a wheel up on both. Turn the engines a few turns the same amount with tractors in 4th gear. The wheel will turn a greater distance for SH gears. If engine is stuck or just want to do another way, Mark wheels and block the clutch pedals down and turn the pto shafts the same # of turns. SH gears should turn the wheel more in 2, 3 and 4.
They used I in 1939.
 
looks like the drives for the planter are still mounted on the disc brakes. wonder if they blew the engine on the s-h and put a motor out of an h in this tractor. saw a smta at an auction 2 years ago that had an m motor in it.
 
Thanks for the insight about the planter drives. I hadn't thought to ask yet what those things were for but I had wondered about it. It looks like the engine, clutch housing and rear assembly at least were all from different tractors. Are the planter drives removable from the brakes and if so are they something that anyone would want or are all of the planters already gone? Thanks very much.

Thanks, those sound like easy ways to figure out what gears it has. Tomorrow I will try it out and see what I can tell from it and post back.

Thanks, that makes sense. The new head is on an engine that has
good looking oil and antifreeze, but I have not tried to get it to run.

the drives are removable, there are dust covers that go over the holes. i would save the drive units, they are often separated from the planter and lost, just like those on your h. i 'm sure there are quite a few planters around yet.
 
Thats the notched end of the bull pinion gear shaft sticking out. Cover plugs are just missing from the brale housing. All the disc brake tractors that size and time used that shaft.
 
i cant remember the drives sticking out that far, on my late m, the dustcaps seem to be in a lot closer, i have to go over to the other farm and take a look at my h. heres a pic of the disc housing on my m.
