H vs SH transmission gears

Thanks to D Slater I have determined (I think) that there are in fact SH gears in this rear end. My 49 H requires 5.25 turns on the PTO to rotate the rear wheel 1/2 turn in 3rd gear and the new mystery tractor only took 4.5. If I have my head screwed on the right way today that means that the presumed Super H transmission has a slightly higher gear ratio and is therefore what it claims to be. Another thing I noticed is that the axles look to be about 4" longer on the Super which makes me wonder if they came longer or if the ones on my H were cut off at some point. Thanks very much for the help.

Yes Supers had a higher 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. The axels were also longer on them as well. Check the cast dates on the rear it should be either a Y or Z cast date if you have a super rear

Seriously, Dave is very knowledgable about the H's and M's. He has helped me a lot over the years.

Widest H wheels can be set is 80 inches, SH is 88 inches, so your 4" is correct.

Thanks very much, the castings of the tub and the trumpets(to give them their vernacular names) are all Y but the top cover is a K or an N, I can't remember now. This tractor is a real mutt, and the further into it I get the happier I am that I decided to part it out. There are major parts of at least 4 tractors involved in it and some very bad welds and repairs.

Yes, he has been very kind and helpful to me also. It's nice to know
that there are people as nice as some of the folks on this site.

Thanks, that's good to know. I was guessing since it is hard to measure accurately with the hub in place.
