Will 12V Battery damage a 6V starter on a Farmall H. Tractor has a Magneto and no generator. Battery supplies voltage to nothing else but the starter.

It should be fine as long as you don't run it for very long periods, like 30 seconds or more. My H is the same way and it does fine. It actually starts when I let go of the start button, so I usually just give it a quick poke.

It depends on the condition the starter is in now. I haven't had a starter fail as a direct result of 12v. Usually mine wouldn't turn over on 6v but would with 12v. I could tell they were in poor shape.

Keep the tractor tuned good and easy starting. Don't crank it too long and get the starter hot. When it's time to have the starter rebuilt I have a clutch type drive installed and eliminate the spring type bendix. It won't hit quite so hard.

12 volts to a 6 volt starter probably wont damage the starter unless you were to let it run so long it overheated, butheck too long run times hard loaded can harm even a 12 volt stater ran at 12 volts.

It can be a bit tougher on the starter drive mechanism but I never had any go bad. It can be less harsh on the starter drive if the 12 volt battery is lighter duty.

We used to convert a lot of 6 to 12 tractors, particularly M series for winter use, It was our experience that the 6v starter would last a long time because you didnt have to grind on it a long time, just go ahead & use it up, then replace with 12v.

My father has an 800 series Ford Powermaster (841? and 44 hp gas) that he converted to 12V in the 70's. Never replaced a starter motor, but has rebuilt the starter drive a few times. Like others have said, it starts in seconds hot or cold. The little motor will wind up quick! I recommend it.
