Super C starter

I bought a super c about four years ago and noticed the starter acting up since the day I brought it home. Over half the time i use the starter the thing spins without engaging the gears. If I hit it blunt with a soft hammmer it will work, most of the time. I can always get it going eventually but it gets frustrating. The tractor is converted to 12 volt. Do I need a new starter or is it just some bad connections? I've never taken it apart. Any help would be great.

Bingo! to what "old" said below--or both.
This is a common problem with Super C's (and maybe C's too?)

When we rebuilt our Super C a few years ago, we put on a new ring gear. A bad ring gear chews up the gear on the Bendix. But what is happening with you certainly is not unknown in the world of the Super C.

I'd start by pulling the starter and taking it to a good electrical shop and tell them to do whatever needs to be done. Put off the ring gear thing as long as possible because it requires splitting the tractor.

A ring gear is worn when the teeth, turn to litle nubs, or practically do not exist. An easy way to find out, is to take out the starter, you will only see a small section of the ring gear, but it should be enough to tell you how worn it is, and if you should replace it.

Purchase and install the new style drive pinion. It has a internal damper and does not have the big spring. They seem to cure many problems. I think this site sells them as well as other sources. If the ring gear is at all usable, the new drive will work. Jim

The starter motor spinning without cranking the engine and not making a grinding noise is caused by the drive not sliding out on the helix splines. Either the splines are damaged or there is grease on them. When the starter is engaged it depends on the inertia of the drive resisting beginning to spin to get it to move out on the helix to engage the flywheel before it begins to spin with the armature. A lubricant that is too stiff will cause the drive to spin with the armature before it engages the ring gear teeth. In your case though, as long as you can get it to work with a few raps of a hammer I would look more to drive sticking in the retracted position rather than a lubrication problem.

Sounds like the atarter nees a good refreshing like cleaning and nes bushings bearings and a drive along with brushes before it totaly fails thats why they went to 12v rather than service the starter.
