1949 MD Sleeve Failure

My MD shuttered, then started missing and smoking blue. No compression on one cylinder.
Diesel fuel is leaking into crankcase. Drained oil and lots of sleeve pieces came out. Pieces have cross hatching marks. Engine does not knock and has great oil pressure. I know a major rebuild is the prescription, but what caused this failure?
Thank You.

Best Guess on my way of thinking is thatthe sleeve was loose in the bore (too loose) and cracked around the top ring allowing the sleeve to drop down.
as it dropped the top ring expanded above it and made a snap ring effect pulling it down into the crank case. Engines hate that, and puke sleeve fragments till they stop.
It should not be a tough repair. Use service manual information on the sleeve fit. If you find the other sleeves are just fine, and want a single sleeve, LA Sleeve (on line) has them, or can make them easily. Jim
