Super A, Knock in transmission

Cranked the Super A today just to circulate the oil and charge the battery. When I parked it last all was well. Today there was a strong knock in the transmission, push in the clutch, the noise goes away. Oil level in the transmission was full. Pulled the top, nothing appears to be out of order. Anyone have an idea of what might be wrong?

Does it do it while in Neutral with the clutch out? Or just when driving? My Farmall C did the exact same thing you described, though it only does it when driving. Been sitting all winter, fired it up to let it run for a bit since it hasn't in a while, drove it around the barn and it started making a clicking/knock noise in the rear. Only does it when moving though. In neutral with the clutch out it's silent as a church mouse. Haven't opened it up yet but I suspect it to be something rear end related.

Not sure about the Super A noise, but on the Farmall C, I would
check closely the rear wheel to rim bolts. You may have one loose;
a loose one sure makes a loud clunking noise.

You know, it's weird you say that. I had that happen on my M before, and this was the cause. Tightened them up and problem gone. However I checked them all a bunch of times, and unfortunatly they're all as tight as I can get them with a 3ft breaker bar. Werid though, the noise is almost EXACTLY the same.

I'm curious to find out what the verdict is because I have the same thing going on with my H. Doesn't matter if it's in gear or not, as long as the clutch is out it knocks. Push in the clutch at it goes away. It gets louder under load. This was my grandfather's tractor and I'm a novice at this, but my neighbor thinks it could be broken teeth on gears or some bearing shot. Way beyond my expertise.

took my super a to a farmer that works on them because it was mking a clankin noise when moving.found the oiler gear that runs off the reverse gear was missing about 3 inches of teeth. he said his farmals dont have that gear and he doesnt no what its purpose is when all the lower gears kick up oil. so my question is can this toothless gear cause damage cause its about 800 to fix.

My theory on why all the oiler gears have their teeth stiped is because if there is any water in the transmission (which there usually is) and it freezes in the winter those aluminum gear teeth will easily strip out when you start the tractor. Once some teeth are striped out, eventually they will all strip out. Roger

There is a aluminum gear in the back of the trans. if I remember right I think its for oiling, I have seen them wear on the splines and knock, it will stop when you push the clutch in and make the noise any time the clutch out.

Could you have some frozen water in the tranny that caused damage to the aluminum oiling gear at startup.

(AFAIK, the gear serves to kick up oil to keep the tranny oiled during times of idling or PTO use when the bottom shaft isn't turning.... bottom shaft is output to differential.)

That's why I'm worried mine is something with the rear axle/bull gears. It is silent in neutral with the clutch out, just driving it makes noise.
