Farmall H gas tank questions

I'm working on a 1940 H I bought last fall. I pulled the gas tank off to clean it, and I have a couple questions.
1. What holds the 3 studs in place that fastens the tank to the tractor? Two of them began turning when I tries to loosen the nuts. I ended up splitting the nuts with a cut off wheel to get them off. I'm wondering what holds them in place, or how I can secure them when putting the tank back on.

2. Does this tank have a baffle in it, or does it not go out all the way to the pointed end? In attempting to look in the filler hole, it appears that there is something in there. Plus, when I took the tank off, it was a lot heavier than similar sized tanks from other tractors.

This is the first Farmall I have worked on, so I would appreciate any help you guys can offer. I plan to get a parts book, but have not yet done so.

Thanks!
Rich

The studs screw into a threaded insert that is soldered or brazed into the tank. If those studs come out, just screw 'em back in.

Yes, the tank has a baffle in it, and any rocks or hardware you put in the tank to knock the rust loose will get behind that baffle and it is nearly impossible to get them back out. Use muriatic acid to clean the tank.

Yes, the tank IS heavy. It is made of some pretty good stuff.

Thanks, Rusty!
The idea of threaded inserts hadn"t even occurred to me! I was araid they were soldered directly to the tank, and that if I twisted one off, I would wreck the tank! I feel a lot better now.
Thanks also for clarifying the baffle. I was holding off on dumping rocks in there for that very reason. I will just get some muriatic acid and rinse it out with that. It"s not in real bad shape, so I"m sure that will do it.
THanks again for your help!

The muriatic acid is nasty and dangerous. Use extreme caution, and rinse several times with water.
