HOW MUCH MURIATIC ACID?

Hey guys!!!Quick question... how much acid should I use to clean a SC gas tank? It isn't in bad shape but does have varnish in the bottom. Already done the chain thing. Little rust but enough to mess things up.What is the process? Thanks again in advance!!! Learnin' alot from you fellas!!!LOL

Place a 1" piece of brake line tubing in your sediment bowel inlet, "stuff" will stay in the bottom of the tank with the 1" of fuel, easy fix?

Not much, whatever that means. AND, you cannot wash all the acid out, meaning it will always be there. It has to be neutralized with a LOT of a product such as baking soda. Wash it out good then use the baking soda -- if you just dump the soda in the acid, you will get a violent reaction. BUT, if all you have is varnish, I would not do anything. It's chunks of rust that cause the problem. Muratic acid is the slang term for HCl, hydrochloric acid, a very potent, strong acid that will eat you alive in it's concentrated form. The non-laboratory version you buy in hardware stores is diluted but still dangerous.

I would avoid it if possible. I used it in my cub tank and regret using it. I wish I knew of something equal without the problems after...

Dump a gal. in it and turn the tank every 4 hours till you have "covered the inside" then dump it back in the jug for the next one. Rinse and neutralize and then Red Coat.

Muriatic acid will strip the zinc (galvanize) out of your tank. I doubt if it will have any effect on the varnish. You need a solvent for that. Methylene chloride (aviation paint remover) will do the job. You may be able to get weak MC solutions at your local hardware store.

I don't want to start the fight I see coming, but how do you figure? HCl is extremely water soluable. I think the triple rinsing process will get all of it out of the tank. Nobody said you couldn't rinse it 10 times just to be safe.

OP
I would use about a gallon.
It won't do a thing on varnish. Somebody suggested acetone the other day. I haven't tried it, so I can't fully endorse it.
