my farmall m has been jumping out of 5th gear so i decided to try to find the problem, first i removed the belt pulley delete cover and saw that the 5th gears were not engaging all the way. so then i uncupled the input shaft and found that it slid in & out and then the 5th gear would engage all the way. why does it have that movement? or is that right

No answers, but a few facts that might help.
- 5th gear doesn't move near as far as the rest of the gears. This is bc it uses the inside of the 4/5 gear.
- There are springs that push giant steel balls down into the detents on your shift rails to hold it in gear. These springs will get rusty and break. If it goes in and pops out this is a common problem.

The gear motion is not normal. There could be a bad bearing or bearing retainer on that front shaft.
The jumping out is a combination of slightly worn shifter forks, rounded off splines on the input shaft, and mating splines on the 4th-5th slider, and possible weak springs.rust damage on the detent ball in the rails. New replacement gear and front shaft can be had (or good used). The reason they eventually go out is the grinding into fifth from forth when on the road (remember it is more than 50 yrs old!) Best of luck, there are many posts with pictures for the gears and solutions. An H is the exact same layout (not interchangeable, but the pictures can interchange. Jim

sorry, i guess i should have said that the lever is not jumping out but the gears are not staying fully engaged....thanks for the help.

Jim has layed out the challange and I have passed :) By the way, ask my how I know common reasons a tractor will hop out of 5th gear

That second gear from the left (About where the hammer is hanging from the side of the trans) is the 4/5 gear.
AND to Mr. SHVTA...looks like I have seen a bull gear!

It is then on its way. If it just pops part way out then catches again all I have said still applies. Jim

A bad front main shaft bearing will almost always cause them to pop out of 5th. If the main shaft is not kept in alignment with the input gear it will walk the 5th gear back until it pops out of gear.

I have the same problem plus you can't fully engage 5th. I know the transmissions on the Cubs and A's but never worked on an M. Please walk me through. PM is out. Thanks

Pop the top on the trans an go to town. It is REALLY easy. Get the service manual and it will provide a very little guidance. Not sure if the I&T manual says much, but judging by my other experiences just go to TSC and read it. Then leave it right there in the aisle bc it is not worth the paper it was printed on.

There is no need to remove the top cover to replace the two input shaft bearings and the front main shaft bearing. They can all be removed after removing the Lift-All pump.

If that is the problem and the only problem.
