paper vs metal belt pullies

I'm curious - was going to paper pullies a war time thing. Tractors from the 30's were steel and every super I've seen was steel. I've got a 43 H and M and both are paper.

from what i read in guy fays book, the switch was done around the time the super h and super m came out.

the metal pulleys are made of cast iron, not steel. i too think it was a war thing. cast iron was the most available material to use. also i have never seen a ih cast iron pulley with eight holes like the later paper pulleys. if they were made after world war two they would have had eight mounting holes instead of four like the earlier paper pulleys. just my observations.

I have a late serial # H (389442) that was delivered with a steel pulley (4 bolt). That's not to say it was shipped to the dealer with a steel pulley, but when it showed up at the farm it had a steel pulley on it. An option maybe? Not sure...maybe someone else can weigh in.

I heard, and not to say it is the truth, but I heard that the paper pulleys were standard and performed the best but cast iron pulleys were an option for tractors that spent most of their time outdoors.

i was digging thru guy fays letter series book, under the super m section pto and belt pulleys, it says the cast iron pulleys were supplied because the supplier of the old fiber faced pulleys has gone out of business.

Think it goes like this. Rockwood manufacture company stopped making pulleys for IH in 1951. IH started getting them from browning manufacturing company. Around that time IH used what they called grey iron pulleys only when the the fiber faced pulleys were not available. By 1955 IH had canceled the use of iron pulleys on H&M 300,400 tractors.
