Lighter front on m

Has any one made and used aluminum bolster stiring shaft in a m farmall? Did it hold up to extra weight on the front? Can it take a hard fall? I am thinking I might have one made to see how lite I can be in the front.I am looking to get down to 4000 pounds.

The shaft needs to be steel, don't even think about aluminum. Although you might get it to work for pulling, somewhere down the line someone may be killed when it breaks. I have broken a steel one on an H. Glad I wasn't in road gear.

there is probably an alloy that could work, but the shaft is not that heavy, and its integrity is a safety related concern. Removing weight from the cast iron of the bolster is more likely to be shedding pounds. removal of the crank start shafts, a wooden dowel would look original, and break off if you passed by to close (rather than taking out a kidney as it does now). running on a small motor cycle battery and starting it from a jump. eliminates the generator regulator and assorted brackets. I agree with the other two fellows--- look elsewhere to lighten it up. I broke one on an extremely low-hour Super H pulling a water tank wagon along a smooth lane in 4th gear. The life you save might well be your own. There are all kinds of tricks to lighten an M; look at the pulling forum.

The pulling forum is stupid. Nobody wants to say anything for fear it might beat them. That is just my observation, I haven't been there in quite a while.

You can use a 460 bolster rather than your M bolster. They will look the same, but they are lighter by 50+ lbs.

Thank you for all the good advice I will take it to heart. For the ones that think I will beat you, most of you I will never pull at the same places and my tractor is not more than stock. Also thank you for not putting me or others down for asking a question.so many other subjects get that way.I pull red but like the other ones too.

Make sure you measure the 460 front end bolt holes and compare them to yours if you go buy one. I am 90% it is the 460 not the 560. It gets a little fuzzy bc the 560 is really the M and the 460 is really the H...you know what I mean. But I am POSITIVE the 60 series is lighter than a letter series front end.
