Farmall A compression

Purchased an A a while back that was running (no smoke)and advertised with no cracks or welds. Took the front cover off the engine and found front right side of block had been welded. Decided not to rebuild due to weld. Checked the bearings (ok) and cleaned the head & valves. Assembled head with new head gasket. Checked compression with finger in spark plug hole and could just barely feel air being pushed out when turning the engine over by hand (manifold was off). What does this mean?

Randy , you can not tell much of anything turning that engine by hand . But feeling compression by doing that tells me you do have compression, HOWEVER you can not make a good decision about the need for a rebuild unless you do a proper compression check .
You can rent a compression gauge from several of the parts suppliers .
If tractor was running and no smoke ----I would not worry about weld in block , I would clean her up and work her red off !!!

cleaned head and valves? did you remove valves if did , must be replaced in same guide it came out of. when looking at valves need to know what to look for, like the seat and so on. turned engine over by hand? is this with the crank so you can get a steady revolution? if so then it should blow air out of plug hole with finger over hole. proper check is to use a guage if you want a good reading. did you adjust valves properly? manifold off dont matter. the most probable cause would be valve not seating, or not adjusted or not rotating engine fast enough during check.

Checking for compression doing it that way tells you pretty much nothing more then you have some. How good or bad no one knows and turning one over buy hand unless you have 2 people and the plugs are all out and the guy can spin it good and fast is not the way to check it. What you found say you have compression and it may in fact be good to go. Put a starter on it and a compression gauge
