M Won't stay running

I have a M that will start right up but will only run a second or two then die,hit starter as soon as it dies and it will start right up again and die. I am sure it is getting gas. Would it may be a coil, resister, condenser, where should I start? THX Frog

grab a spare spark plug, pull one of the plug wires off , hook the spare plug up and ground it to the tractor. try and start the tractor and watch the plug to see how it fires, and if the spark stops firing. if you have a resistor, it sounds like a 12v conversion. does it have an electronic conversion or breaker point ignition? and by chance do you have an aftermarket starter solenoid with a push button ignition?

I like Glenster's thinking. Put a temporary jumper wire from the non grounded battery post to the coil terminal now hooked to the ignition switch. Start it. If it stays running the ignition supply circuit is at fault and could even be the switch. If it quits, the problem is either coil condenser, or points.
OOOrrr it could be fuel. Jim

I have a breaker point and not sure of solenoid it has,but it has a key ignition with acc,run startif that helps.Thx.

It does help. If the Starter relay is a 4 terminal affair. the wire connected to the I small terminal is connected to the coil or resistor on the coil side. This supplies starting voltage to the coil as a bypass (as I was having you do in my post). When the key is turned back to run, this wire is disconnected. Thus the coil is now dependent on the ignition switch and the wire to the resistor, and the resistor. Resistors fail. Jumper it as I indicated, and try it. Jim

Have you messed with the starter button lately? If it dies as soon as you release the button, put the ammeter wire on the other terminal.

If you have a ballast resistor between the coil and your ignition switch it may be the problem. Hal

My Super M and H did the same thing last spring and it was corrosion in the distributer cap on the coil. Check for that at all the wire
Contacts. Good luck.
