my son has a 400 gas that had starter trouble last winter so for a quick fix i put my 400d starter in it. rebuilt his starter but now i cant remember how his wiring goes back. i know the battery goes to the big stud on the right and the starter goes to the big stud on the left. there is a hot wire from the big stud on the right to the key. it has a push button starter button added mounted on the side of the dash. how do i wire the starter button and there is a wire coming from the gen also. thanks

There is a heavy (10ga) wire hooked to the battery cable stud on the Relay (that thing is a relay, not a solenoid, but is is often called the wrong thing by tradition, oh well) that wire goes only to the amp gauge. it should be the only thing on that side of the amp gauge. From the other side of the amp gauge a wire(12GA)(among many other) should go to the ignition Key. This supplies volts to the coil.
Another from that gauge terminal goes to the starter button. From the starter button, a 12ga wire goes to the small terminal on the Relay in the picture (should have an S near it)closest to the battery connected stud. This energizes the relay causing the starter to spin.
A 12 gauge wire from the farther terminal (next to the starter connected stud) Usually with an I label next to it, goes to the ignition coil. It connects to the coil on the coil terminal not connected to the distributor.
This wire gives full starting voltage to the coil bypassing the ballast resistor.
If the tractor is 6 volt, or has no dropping resistor, this wire and terminal can be ignored. I hope this helps. Jim
