Cast Iron pistons in an M

Far as I know, all M's came with cast iron pistons except the diesels, they had aluminum. First power packages for H and M were aluminum piston that were same size bore as original. That was a long time ago though.

when i got my 47 M i took the head off measured the bore and bought some rings thinking i had standard cast iron piston. was i ever wrong. i had aluminum pistons and the rings are hard to find. it took me about 2 months to finally locate the rings. wish i had the stock cast iron pistons for sure, whole lot easier to find rings for

I vaguely remember reading something about a switch to aluminum at some point in Guy Fay's book but the book is over at Dad's! (Also the book is technically dad's anyway).

Like you, all the domed pistons I've seen were aluminum, some of the flat tops too.

What was different about the rings? Thicker? Thinner?

What got me on this is that I'm tinkering with a '46 that has most of the distillate equip left. From the spark plug hole I know it has flat top pistons. I'm wondering if it could be stock stuff.

It would be EXTREMELY rare to find an M Farmall with the original cast iron pistons, in fact, I don't think I have EVER seen one. My 1940 M, which was originally a distillate burner, has flat top cast aluminum pistons.

This one seems to be a relatively low time machine based on my unqualified exam of the common wear and tear areas. It only has only had one repaint and that was forever ago.

I need a small retrievable magnet to go in the spark plug hole and see if it's sticky. Maybe I'll work on that later today.

i tried every set of rings they sold on here to no end. on mine the second and third ring groove where bigger than the cast iron ones. i had a local shop piece me together a kit.
