H Tar in air passageways

Brought the '49 H in the other day to give it a new paint job. Took off the carburetor and found where the air passes through it had an alarming build up of tar. The gas passages were all clear. The tar was laying in the bottom of the air cleaner pipe and was in all the passage ways clear to the head inlets and probably ended (or started} at the valves. Was thinking valves or valve guides. Haven't had a chance to look any deeper yet. Engine does not smoke and seems to have plenty of power. Thanks, Allan.

I'm thinking oil that got sucked through the oil bath air cleaner.....???? Or just old gas from when it was sitting.

Same thoughts here. Haven't taken one off yet that didn't have quite a bit of oily buildup in there. My H was more tarrish than the rest. I soaked it in the parts cleaner for a couple days and then scrubbed it with a toilet brush.

if you have never taken the mesh out and cleaned it it could be the trash that's in the mesh. I got some of what your talking about in the carb and I took the mesh out and there was a lot of tar looking material in the mesh that keep coming down into the air cleaner .
