I have a tractor ID#FAA171045 - can anyone tell me the year of the tractor? Grounded in mag. Replaced points and condenser - still grounded. Is there any test procedures to fix this problem? I'm lost.....John

FA is the prefix for a F20, AA is the prefix for a F30 engine . not familiar with FAA prefix. Need some more info or better yet a pic of tractor to give you a year.

Start with the simple stuff on the mag, is the spark lever(front cap) in the run position? is the ground contact bent behind the cap?

also, is the wire from the condenser to the point rubbing anywhere? There is also an internal spark gap, make sure that is not bent over and touching.

FAA is the prefix for a Farmall A. The mag has no lever, it is simply timed with #1 on TDC.

A link to beginning serial numbers for each year are listed under Research and Info to your left.

What do you mean by grounded. If you mean that if you yest the mag it produces no spark. (with no insult intended) The mag makes its own electricity, it is grounded to stop the tractor by hooking the internal electricity it makes to ground through a switch. It never is connected to tractor electricity. If it was to be so hooked, it would get the wires hot, and cause serious injury to the mag. I hope this is not the case, but I read your post differently from the others. Jim

and I followed 36F30 right down the rabbit hole! :? My question about the wire from the condensor to the points still holds true though......
