Rear rim clamp bolts

I started loosening up the rear rim clamps so I can wire brush them and paint them in prep for new rims and tires. The bolts are in really rough shape and the first one I removed required a cheater bar and the bolt snapped.
I called the local IH dealer, they looked them up as a 5/8 x 4 1/4 " national course square head bolt at $13.02 each. I think I'd need 12 bolts and after taxes and shipping I'd be paying around $175 for bolts.
Anyone know of a less expensive source? Do I really need IH square head bolts or can I just pick up a 5/8 x 4 1/4" hex head bolt from the hardware store?
Thanks in advance.

Go to Fastenal, look in the "heavy" bolts section. They have the heavy hex, 4 1/4 for $4.
It has the larger head for better stress distribution like the square.

CNH isn't really ripping you off for square heads (for what it's worth) I called Fastenal for square wheel weight bolts and they would be $100+

Yes, you can just wire wheel them and use them again. Not sure if hex heads will catch like a square head on the wheels. I know they work on the front wheels and a few other places.

Try Norman Jackson in Greenfield, Indiana at (317) 431-4803 who is a Red Power Round-up vendor who specializes in square head bolts among other things. In his price sheet of a year or two ago he has 5/8" X 4 1/2" listed for $3.50 each. I bought a few things from him for my Super C restoration and some other bolts for a friend who was restoring a couple implements. He seems like a very nice guy who is well known on this forum. There was a recent post about someone having trouble contacting him like he might have been away from home for some reason. Never did hear the outcome so don't know anything about his present condition. Hope this helps, Hal.

On my M, I bought new Grade 8 bolts and ran the threads further down the bolt. If you have a different model, you may be able to do the same.

I don't know for sure, but I bought many new bolts for my '39 A at ACE hardware. Still expensive, but not that bad. And also, go online and search for nuts and bolts. I'm sure you can get grade 8 duplicates for less than that.

I have purchased a lot of hardware items over the years and the prices vary widely. Buying from the dealers is always tough as they buy them and then mark them way up as a "specialty" item.

My wife says I have to go have supper now. I'll look myself later.

I to would recommend Fastenall.I was able to get grade "8"s at a nearby Caterpillar dealer built by Cat. Anymore nowadays it's hard to find good steel to keep on our precious old American iron. Old hardware or old tractor/dealer stores? Good luck and it may be worth digging around to get what you want.

Go to a farm store and get cadmium plated grade 5 hex head. You can get all of them for about the same price as one square head square head from IH, as they sell by the pound, most hardware stores have an "each" price. You won't have to paint them, and in my opinion the cadmium plated look better anyway.

When you go to TSC and get the grade 5 bolts they are some goofy green color. Kind of weird. I like the gold color of Gr 8s myself. 8)

EDIT - I went and did an image search for cadmium plated. You must have meant Gr 8 bc 90% of the pictures I saw were gold.

Type this in to Google and you'll find enough bolts for all of us on this forum.

5/8" x 4 1/4" square head bolts

I thought I"d need square head bolts to fit in a retainer channel of some sort, now that I have this all apart I see no reason why I couldn"t use a regular hex bolt.

I went to TSC last night and bought a handful of the green-ish $2.99 per lbs bolts. The gold-ish bolts were $4.49 per lbs, I wondered how either would hold paint and if both were rust proof.

"Rust Resistant" the only thing rust proof is stainless and then you really pay for strength.

I would use Gr 8s for anything where life saftey is involved*. Hitch, wheels, etc

*Unless the book says different. I know the hitch of my B specifically calls for Gr 5, not Gr 8

BTW, they paint just fine. We used silver and gold on our 1770 12 row planter restoration and they all hold paint right up until you put a wrench on them. Nothing will hold paint then.

Thanks Hal,
He is a very nice guy, I ended up ordering an entire set for both wheels, square head bolts, inner half nut and the outer nut, $4.50 per set. He'll mail them out with a catalog tomorrow, nice person to deal with.
Thanks again
Don

The problem you might (or might not) have is finding bolts with enough thread, if I remember right bolts need to be threaded 3/4 or so of their length.

That's one of the intangibles from attending the RPRU's or any other high level IHC tractor shows as you get to first hand meet several really nice folks to deal with in the future. Norm is supportive of us restore folks and provides several things for reasonable cost which are hard to find. Glad it worked out, Hal.
P.S. They would probably look really nice if you could locate a company that does metal plating and have them zinc plated as they would certainly look good and most likely never rust.

No, they were cadmium plated grade 5 from another farm store--we have a new Tractor Supply, really doubt if I buy their funny colored grade 5's. If I do paint cadmium I scuff it first with the wire wheel on a bench grinder, same with grade 8,--if they are called for.

I think they just color them differently so the high schooler at the cash register doesn't ring up the wrong ones.

I received these 12 bolts, 12 thin nuts and 12 regular nuts in the mail Friday. Bill with shipping came to $57, much better than $300 from Case-IH

It looks like he used a 4 1/2 inch square head bolt with about an inch of thread and used a die and cut more threads. Looks like the die was a little dull because the threads on the first inch look fine, the threads the rest of the way look very rough, I ran a nut down it, didn"t go very smoothly by hand. I"m going to buy another die and try to clean them up a bit, although I"m sure they would work just fine, and for a $250 savings I can handle some rough threads.
